She Watched Her Curves
2024. Pantyhose, stuffing, rope, homemade fake blood, vintage scale.
Someone once told me, “A woman spends her entire adult life trying to lose weight.” This pursuit requires a woman to battle against the natural ebbs and flows of her body, which come with aging, pregnancy, menstruation, stress, and health issues. This piece showcases the resulting physical and psychological destruction that results from this battle. The deformed legs are held down by a vintage scale, representing the history of the “thin ideal.” My conformity to this ideal causes self-injury, which can be seen in the red rope, which I tied in a Hangman’s Knot, that holds up the piece.
