In this video, I express my frustration with the commercialization and trivialization of mental illness in popular culture. I perform in mental-illness-themed attire, such as a hat that says “I’ll Bring the Anxiety.” Making mental illness “relatable” can help people feel less alone, but some people go too far and make light of conditions that can be life-ending. The blanket that I’m taking apart during the piece represents my childhood blanket, which I picked apart due to OCD habits. As I try and fail to cope with OCD, my cheerful exterior falls apart like pop culture’s insincere attempts to destigmatize mental illness. I chose the song “The Beat Goes On” by The Whispers because it is my favorite song, and I will repeat the chorus over and over in my mind.
