I Remember Feeling Human
2025. Pantyhose, PVC pipe, clay, styrofoam
This sculpture depicts a deteriorating figure with traces of a human form. Its thin arms are turned upwards like bat wings or frail arms, while the lack of hands suggests a sense of desperation or debility. Pieces of pantyhose form a web of knots, and create the impression of a fading body. Rather than appearing human, the figure looks monstrous, which connects to philosopher’s David Livingstone Smith’s theory about the uncanny power of dehumanization. He relates this idea to disability, as disabled people were historically mistreated because they were seen as monsters, aberrations, and less than human.
